This is how it all came about.
One day, out of the blue, Jimmy said "Dave, let's do a recording together, you and me.
Dave agreed, but nothing more was said about the projest until several months had passed.
Dave had some reservations about it; he wasn't sure that his group could offer the right setting for Jimmy.
Also, various engagements kept their paths from crossing.
Then while everyone was in Eurpoe on jazz concert tours - Dave with the Quartet,
Jimmy with the Buck Clayton All-Stars - the subject came up again.
"Let's make that recording when we get back to the States," Said Jimmy.
"Okay," Dave replies, "but do you really think we can play the right background for you?"
"I know it," Jimmy answered. "I've been listerning to you for years, and I knew I know we can make a great recording."
So they got together in a studio and recorded this collection, a spontaneous explosion of jazz.
Dave and Jimmy have never worked together before, nor even rehearsed together.
What came about is the meeting of two main movements in jazz - one of the most exciting collections I have ever heard.
Everybody swings a Dave and Jimmy both bring out the best of each other.

When Jimmy starts to sing, with a big band, small band or all-star group,
every musician swings just a little bit harder.
Jimmy is contagious!
I consider it a privlege to provide a background in these songs for Jimmy Rushing's voice.
We didn't want to intrude on his style, simply to provide an accompaniment which would make hime free.
There were no suggestions as to how we should play behind him.
We only knew that in working with Jimmy, we would have to rely on instinct, to follow the feeling of the movement,
To help him build the mood that he creates in a song.
Jimmy is the daddy of them all.
